Kentucky Hitchhiker

Makes 2 cocktails

3 ounces V.S. Cognac

3 ounces orange liqueur, such as Cointreau

1 lemon

½ cup granulated sugar

Pour the sugar out into a shallow dish. Cut the lemon in half and rub the rims of two coupe glasses with a lemon half to moisten them.

Roll the rims of the glasses gently through the sugar to coat the rims, then set the sugar and glasses aside.

Juice the lemon. In a large cocktail shaker, add cognac, orange liqueur, lemon juice and a few ice cubes. Shake vigorously, then strain into the rimmed coupes and enjoy at once.

The sidecar was the original cosmopolitan — not on account of its international devotees, but more for the “sweet drink” stigma attached to it. My version ditches the sugar entirely and increases the lemon juice significantly.  The result is a roguish, daring concoction that hits all the right notes.
