A MARIO BATALI RECIPE

Classic Mint Julep

 

It’s that time of the year–the horses are getting ready to run and we’re dusting off our julep cups!


Ingredients

for mint simple syrup:

1 bunch mint

2 cups sugar

2 cups water

 

for 1 mint julep cocktail:

2 ounces Kentucky bourbon

1 ounce mint simple syrup

crushed ice

Directions

Reserve about a quarter of the mint for muddling and for garnish your juleps, then roughly chop the rest of the bunch. In a small saucepan, combine chopped mint, sugar and water.  Bring to a boil over medium heat.  Allow to fully boil for 1 minute, then remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.  Once cooled, strain out the mint leaves and chill the mint syrup in the refrigerator.

 

To make the juleps, muddle 9 mint leaves with 1 ounce of mint syrup in the bottom of a frosted julep cup or tumbler. Add crushed ice until cup is about 3/4 full, then add 2 ounces of Kentucky bourbon per cocktail.  Stir vigorously to combine, then top with more crushed ice up to the rim of the glass, garnish with a sprig of mint...and you're off!
